SO THE SUN STOOD STILL…

In the book of Joshua Ch. 10 God did something super-natural; He stopped the sun so that His work could be accomplished.  Though I have people all around me helping Epic Church get launched, there is sooo much to do!!! Do you ever feel that way?  Wish that you could replicate yourself, or hire someone people to help?  I feel ya!!!  Through it all I have battled to keep a Sabbath on Fridays and to be refreshed daily through prayer and bible study.  Trust me when I tell you that there is a power, rest, and satisfaction that comes from those times that are A MUST no matter how busy you get.  If you are not making that time…GET ON IT!!!  I promise it is the best investment you can make with your time.

OK I better stop before I start preaching!!!!  With all that said…

I hope you get as blown away and excited as me with all that is coming together:

  • Graphic that are getting designed (that will be finalized later this week)
  • The new EpicChurch.co website is about to have media available, it offers a giving page for people to give tithes/offerings/donations, and so much more
  • Athena has agreed to be our interim Director of Epic Kids (check out the staff page on our website for more on this awesome lady!!!
  • We have secured El Camino Creek Elementary as our venue starting May 20th AT LEAST through the summer.
  • We are pumped to announce Shadow Hills Church (Las Vegas, NV) as our newest partner church!!!  They are the largest baptist church in the state of Nevada and have already put together their first mission team to come out the week before Easter to prayer walk and put out 5,000 door hangers.
  • We regretfully had to cancel our bonfire last sunday due to bad weather, so we are calling an audible and doing a day at the park this Saturday instead with games, pizza, and salad.  I will speak out of the book of Nehemiah on the passion and purpose that the church has to love people of the city.
  • As of yesterday our Facebook advertising started and we have already had 60 1st time visitors to our website in these two days!  WHAT-WHAT!!!
  • This week I am working to get some audio/video/lighting/signage to ensure an awesome environment for our first service that is LESS THAN 3 WEEKS AWAY.
  • I am trying to find a way to get a promo video shot that we can post up on the website…ahhhh the website…TALK ABOUT TIME CONSUMING!!!!  Cannot wait to have someone that can handle updating that!!!!!
  • Two weeks ago Stacie, M, and I unplugged for 36 hours and took advantage of an amazingly cheap Groupon special that sent us on a fairy boat ride to Catalina Island.  Though it was chilly, I was able to curl up with a great book, unwind and read/pray/rest without the detraction of my cell, email, and reminders constantly going off.  This was a needed get away and I praise God for it.

There is sooo much more going down, but I do not want to kill ya with too many details.

FINANCIAL PARTNERS - For those of you who have given or are praying about becoming a financial I want to start by saying “Thank You” for your sacrifice to see God’s church built here in North County San Diego! A great question recently came my way about giving money to support Epic:  “What checks and balances do you have to ensure you are doing the right things with any money I give to Epic?”  GREAT QUESTION!!!

  • We have another local church (Generation Church) that  that handles all our finances (writing checks, assessing expense reports, managing payroll, etc.) and holds me accountable.
  • Epic currently has 6 Board of Directors (1 banker/1 CPA) who must approve our budget annually.  The people on this board have each made significant financial investments to Epic, and desire for us to be great stewards of the money given.
  • The book keeping done by Generation Church will be audited annually to ensure that they are held accountable.

WANT TO GIVE TO EPIC CHURCH?  CLICK HERE

PRAYER PARTNERS –

  • Pray that God will open the doors for us to meet weekly at El Camino Creek Elementary once we Launch on Sept.16
  • Pray for AT LEAST 40 to come to church at E Street Cafe this Easter @ 6pm and that AT LEAST 1 person will give their life to Jesus Christ for the very first time!
  • Pray for an addition $100 per week to come available for us to hire a part-time staff person.  This would allow for so much more to be accomplished.
  • Pray for our Launch Team to grow to 21 (that would be an increase of 5 people) after our Easter service!
  • Pray that the Holy Spirit speaks His message through me on Easter.
  • Pray that all the pieces begin falling into place quickly for us to most effectively love and minister to the men, women, teachers, children, waiters, engineers, surf bums, office managers, and everyone else who needs the love of Jesus Christ here!
  • Though I love my sleep to much to want the sun to stand still, I do see soooo much that is yet to fall into place…Pray for my sanity!!!

Blessing to you all…thank you for your love and support…I hope to see you here on mission this summer if possible!!!!

Keepin’ Ya In The Know…Big Stuff

Blessing from Encinitas, CA!!!!

We are on the cusp of experiencing something extraordinary & powerful, but there is SO MUCH to be accomplished in the next two to three months!

PRAISE & PRAYER:

  • Please pray for AT LEAST 25 PEOPLE to be at our BBQ & BONFIRE this weekend to hear the gospel of Jesus Christ & the vision of Epic Church.
  • Please pray that commitments to our launch team grow to 17 people strong over the coming week.
  • Pray for us as we seek a more permanent location for us to gather…one that will include space for EPIC KIDS to effectively communicate the gospel in understandable terms for our children.  We are having a REALLY hard time finding something we can afford that will meet the needs of our church and allow us to meet the needs of our community.  The city has shut us down from using the latest location we were shooting for.  We have a fall back, but are looking for something better logistically.
  • Praise God for 3 more potential partnerships that are being prayed through, and please join us in praying for favor with & discernment in partnering with other churches.
  •  Praise God for all the amazing conversations I have had in the past week with people like Brian, Seth, and more where we have been able to talk about spiritual things and how they ultimately are about Jesus Christ and His role as their Hero and Lord.  Pray for great fruit to come of them!!!!

2012 BOOK & PRAYER LIST

I noticed a tweet this morning of another pastor talking about his reading list for the year, and it reminded me that I wanted to develop one as well.  It is important as a Christ follower to grow in knowledge of what we believe, and it is important to give our best to our job (whatever it is).  These can be aided by becoming a life-long student!

BOOK LIST

Below is a list of 9 books, though not exhaustive, that I am committed to read this year.

  • 3 On Grasping and Communicating the Bible Better

       ”"

  • 3 on Leadership

”"  ”"  ”"

  • 3 on Defending My Faith

”"  ”"  ”"

PRAISE & PRAYER LIST

  • We just got in some general inviter cards that we hope will begin to build awareness of us in the community AND we have our ”newEpicChurch.co website up.  PRAISE God for the resources to purchase these things (they ain’t free!) and PRAY that God will begin to soften and prepare the hearts of this community as we start to engage them on larger levels over the coming months

front of card:

”"

back of card:

”"

  • PRAISE for the fact that our launch team is growing and God is grooming me daily to better lead this church…I am beyond grateful for those who are investing in me, and whom I have the opportunity to invest in.
    • PRAISE that we have someone volunteering to do a photo shoot with us in the next couple of weeks to get some great photos together for the website and for our welcome packets.
  • Stacie, M, myself and one other person will knock on over 100 doors this Friday & Saturday to invite people over to my house for a super bowl partyPRAY that we have a great turnout and that God connects AT LEAST 3 people to be a part of our launch team here at Epic.
  • In the next couple of weeks I should be meeting with two churches about starting a major partnership with Epic.  One church is located in Carlsbad, CA and the other is in Las Vegas, NV.  Please PRAY for God’s wisdom and favor in all of this.  We have covered most of our normal budget costs for 2012  BUT have little money to purchase much needed equipment (such as signs for people to find the church, microphones for people to hear the gospel, etc…).  PRAY continued financial provision for Epic!
  • PRAY for my house to stop being sick!  In the past month I have gotten (and currently am) sick TWICE, and both M & Stacie have gotten sick.
  • Finally, please pray for God to provide for us to hire a worship leader & director of children’s ministry

GOTTA LOVE ROLLER COASTERS

In a perfect Utopia this church plant would be on a rocket blast straight up, but church planting tends to be more like a roller coaster than anything.  Roller coasters are funny things.  They crawl up, rocket down, and jet to the left & right.  Part of you says hold on tight, but you know that the best rides are the ones where you just let go.  It’s just like the ride we are on here to plant Epic Church.

Here is the 3 week recap:

3 WEEKS AGO – Flying home from Christmas I set next to a guy named Chris who I was going to make attempts to share the gospel with only to find out that he was already in love with Christ, had an incredible testimony, and was at our first inviter event with friends.  Epic had its first inviter event; a bonfire and bbq on the beach.  Twenty-four people came to hear my testimony, the vision for Epic, and to have a great night.  The evening seemed to be a sweeping success and we connected with 5 new people through the event.

Additionally, we crafted out our vision statement…are you ready?!?!?! Ok, it all centers around the concept of an epic poem.  An epic poem chronicles the journey of a hero.  Compound that with the reality that we are ALL on a spiritual journey.

At Epic Church we want to invite people on an epic journey with the greatest hero humanity will ever know, Jesus Christ.

2 WEEKS AGO – We hosted a bible study in our home with 9 people in attendance.  The feedback was great!  We had a good time, studied God’s word, and talked about our next event.  Additionally, I finally made the plunge to buy and start working on a website (those things are not cheap!!!).   You can now visit EpicChurch.co to see our live site.  It is not finished yet, but the foundation is there for us to build on. Finally, I had lunch with a guy that we will call Larry.  Larry is not a Christian, and until the past couple of years he was an atheist.  The lunch was a great dialogue of “Who is God”.  To him, god was the waves crashing in against the shore.  I shared with him that it is so easy to get caught up in the beauty of a masterpiece that you forget about the creator.

1 WEEK AGO - My board of directors was completed and now we have meetings set for the entire 2012 calendar.  I am excited to have business owners, CPAs, Management gurus, church strategists, and pastors pouring their wisdom and expertise into Epic!!!  Last Sunday we only had 6 people at bible study, and we shared the gospel!  I was not bothered by the low number, because I have seen churches that started with just 5 people that are now thriving and seeing lives changed for God’s glory.  It was however a reminder that you have to invest in the ones that are there and prepare to raise them up.  Additionally, in this time we began to prep for our Super Bowl Inviter Event coming up.  Finally, we began conceptualizing what our logo will look like and working with a graphic artist.

THIS WEEK – This time is huge…and of course I am sick!  Not sure what hit me but this is twice in a month that I have been knocked down (but not out!).  Found out from River Church San Diego that they want help us start well by committing to cover my cost for our first international mission trip and providing $3000 in scholarship for others for our church to go!!!!

FYI – Epic Church will be investing in a Muslim country located in North Africa.

We are sooo grateful to all of our partners!  On top of reporting to all of you; I have to make reports to the California Southern Baptist Convention and to a few other groups.  Most of my work this week going forth is to follow up with people we have connected with and to connect with an church that might be interested in coming here on a mission trip to do a sports camp, hand out water bottles and sunscreen, or any other number of missional opportunities.

IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO SEE YOUR CHURCH COME HERE ON MISSION PLEASE LET THEM KNOW AND CONNECT ME WITH THE PROPER PASTOR.

Praise & Prayer:

  1. Praise God for the number of people who have shown interest in what God is doing to birth a new church here.
  2. Praise God for the Board of Directors and to all of you who have partnered with us by prayer or giving financially.  Just like a roller coaster…things are on track so please keep it up!!!
  3. Praise God for the opportunity to share the gospel with around 40 people this month…pray for seeds to take toot!
  4. Pray for continued stirring within Larry.  That he will be captivated by Christ.
  5. Pray that we can pack the house for our super bowl event even though both teams are on the east coast.
  6. Pray for my health…get over this cold.
  7. Pray for AT LEAST 10 MISSION TEAMS to come and be a part of Epic for a week leading up to our launch on Sept. 16th

Love to all of you, my brothers and sisters in Him!!!!

Ruined for the Ordinary,

Chaz

Resolutions and Goals

Last night Stacie, M, and I had a wild night!!!  We watched the ball drop in NYC from the comfort of our couch and called it a night.  During the broadcast they showed a poll of the TOP 5 New Year resolutions for 2012, and as one might imagine…it was business as usual.  People said the same things they always say!

  • Better health
  • Better wealth
  • Better self

I wanted to share my personal goals and THE GOALS FOR EPIC CHURCH IN 2012.

For Epic’s goals please click on the link above.  As for my personal goals,  I have two (one health & one spiritual).

First, I resolve to do everything I can to be a part of leading at least 10 people into a personal and powerful relationship with Jesus Christ.

Second, studies have shown that they average church planting pastor will pack on 35lbs. of fat during the first year of the new church.

In 2011 this website had 2,163 visitors, so before everyone I publicly declare that:

I currently weigh 214lbs. I resolve to achieve and maintain a weight under 200lbs.

“SLEEPLESS IN SAN DIEGO”

“SLEEPLESS IN SAN DIEGO”

I think that pretty much describes my past few days.  Ever since we crossed the barrier of 1 month till our first event my mind has been in overload!  Dave Matthews sums up my thoughts as of late, “So much to do, So much to say.”

I AM FIRED UP!!!  I feel like a kid in the days leading up to Christmas, except my thoughts are on what God is going to do…not Santa.  “Who is God going to bring to Epic Church?!?!?!”  My mind is racing with all the powerful, important, and yes, even the mundane things that need to be done.

God just keeps blowing me away with His love and blessings.  RestoreSanDiegoNow.com has now received nearly 2,100 hits!  That means a great deal of prayer from some and curiosity from others.  Just the other day I had someone that I had know for less than an hour give us a check for $1,000, because they prayed before they met me and felt the Lord lead them to give.  On Sunday we were invited to The Way Church in Ramona, CA where we were prayed over and offered some electronics that will help us on our way.  We now have 3 people beyond Stacie, M, and I who are committed to seeing this church happen.  THAT MEANS THAT WE HAVE DOUBLED OUR CONGREGATION…HAHA!!!

God is rocking our faces off and doing some powerful things.  Please praise God with us for the things already mentioned, and pray to God with us for the things below.

  •  FELIZ “NACHO”DA - This Sunday @ 6pm PST we are inviting the 70 apartments that surround us to come into our home and join us for some free food, Christmas music, and Chargers Football.  Stacie, M, and I will be going door-to-door on Thursday evening to personally invite everyone over.  Pray that at least 20 people come and that more that 2 will come to our 1st Inviter Event.  Pray that God will open more doors for us to minister to our neighbors.
  • 1st INVITER EVENT - Sunday Jan. 8th @ 6pm PST we are inviting everyone who is interested in seeing this church start to join us at Moonlight Beach for a Bonfire & BBQ.  I will connect with people and share some of the vision for Epic Church.  Pray that we have at least 15 people attend and that God plants His vision into the hearts of those that come.
  • MADELEINE – Madeleine started walking about 3 weeks ago.  It is a big accomplishment for our little girl!  Though she is doing great, she still wobbles and falls like any kid her age.  Our poor girl has fallen and smacked her head into several things over the past few days, which has led to several bumps and bruises.  Compound that with EXTREME teething, and you have a little girl that is in a great deal of pain.  Pray for balance to come soon, teething to be easy, and healing to come quick.

Thanks to each of you that partner with my family and God’s work here in Encinitas, CA!

It’s All Happening Soooooo Fast!!!!

FIRST THINGS, FIRST:  If you are already a partner with us, please shoot me an email and let me know how you are doing and if there is anything we can be praying for you on.  SERIOUSLY, we care about your life and your ministry…this is not meant to be a one-way relationship!  I want to know how we can minister to your needs also!

NOW ON TO MY BLOG POST….Last night when the house was quiet I began to reflect over the past year of my life, and the road that has led to me being here as a church planting pastor.  I was overwhelmed by the love, counsel, friendship, generosity, and grace that I have been the recipient of from God and from so many of you!  Between family, friends, mentors, and those who have allowed me to pastor over them…I have so much to be thankful for!  Things that Black Friday cannot offer at a discount.  Things that cannot be bought.

Epic Church (the name of our new church) is coming together, and it feels like it is happening soooooo fast!  We moved to Encinitas, CA just under 3 months ago, and I am so thankful for how God is working despite me. I know that the following is going to be a bit lengthy, BUT I believe that it is REALLY IMPORTANT FOR YOU TO KNOW WHAT ALL WE HAVE BEEN UP TO.

If you have ever spent much time around me then you know that I HATE DETAILS…seriously, they make my head hurt!!!  With much time in prayer and many doses of Tylenol I have been able to accomplish or sort out everything that has been in my head and/or my “to-do list”and now I can say that I feel God has worked to give me clarity and peace on the following list of mile-stones that have been accomplished over the past 3 months:

  • Was able to get my car sold 2 days before moving, enabling us to make it (financially) with California’s high cost of living…btw in case you are wondering what I do to get around, I have a mountain bike that I ride 3.7 miles each way to my office (E Street Cafe).  If I go anywhere over 10 miles round trip then I coordinate with Stacie for use of the car.
  • Moved across the country, found the only apartment we could afford, and signed a lease on it the same day…Stacie, M, and I feel safe, are finally settled in (not easy when you lose over 500sqft of space), and it feels like home to us all.
  • There are now over 200 people committed to praying for Epic Church…that’s powerful!!!
  • God has to this point provided 4 ministry organizations, 5 churches, and 17 people who have generously given or are committed to give financially.
  • Stacie and I have almost completed the intense LAUNCH Network training for church planters and their wives to help us maximize our leadership and our ministry.  This has been a 6 month process of reading, researching, interviewing, writing, training, etc.
  • I have been able to build some great relationships for accountability with other pastors, both locally and around the country.  I am grateful to have several men that are now investing time in me as mentors to ensure that I mess up as little as possible.
  • As of Dec 1st, I am THRILLED to say that I will no longer have to touch money that moves in or out of our church.  We have all heard stories of pastors that were crooked with money, and I never want to be one of those statistics.  Thanks to Generation Church in Oceanside, CA for taking over all finances for this ministry.
  • Developed a clear vision and focus for what our identity will be.
  • Knowing what our culture will look like…basically, figuring out what things we are going to say yes to and what we have to be prepared to say no to.
  • Mapping out a plan to take us from our 1st Inviter Event in Jan. all the way through our Sneak Peeks starting in the spring and concluding with our formal launch date of Sept 16th (37 detailed weeks of vision, biblical studies, Inviter Events, Outreach Events, Sneak Peeks for what Sunday will look like when we go full steam every week, training, recruiting, praying, and more praying)
  • Did sociological studies of the community to determine how to best communicate with them and identify with them…we are going native!
  • Connecting with people in the community to share the Great News of Jesus and to recruit a Launch Team (people who will commit to join with us for 8 months to be a part of getting this awesome new work started in Encinitas, CA).  We have a contact list of 15 people from 7 households that have expressed interest in seeing this new church happen.  Many of whom Stacie and/or I have sat down with for coffee or a meal.  There are also many more people who we are excited to be building relationships with and are praying for!
  • Setting the preaching calendar (knowing what the topic and for 22 weeks the verses that will be preached on for each Sunday over the first 30 weeks (starting on launch Sunday)
  • Insurance has been shopped and provided for my family
  • Meetings have been sought after and I am set to meet with the mayor of Encinitas and BOTH superintendents over the two school districts in this community to find out what the city needs that could show that Epic Church truly loves this city.
  • Details are almost complete for our first Annual Partner’s Meeting here in Encinitas, CA!  We will soon be connecting with all of our major partners (individuals or ministries that have given or are committed to give $1000+ to see this new church birthed ) and asking them to Come and See what God is doing with what you have given.
  • We decided on a name for the church, Epic Church, and want to invite everyone to join us on an Epic journey with our hero Jesus Christ
  • I have purchased web domains:  EpicChurch.co AND EpicChurch.mobi
  • I have set up email accounts and have began shopping for a website designer.  I am currently working on web content, graphic design possibilities, and trying to determine the look and software format that we want for the website.
  • I have interviewed 3 worship pastors and 1 youth/children’s pastor and am still looking and praying through priorities for our staff needs.
  • We have compiled a list of possible meeting locations for our church to meet in pre-launch phase once our apartment is outgrown and as most of you know we are actively pursuing the La Paloma Theater for our Sneak Peek services and weekly once we launch.

PRAYER/PRAISE:

  1. Pray that God continues to set appointments for me to engage people for His glory and for Him to build His church.
  2. Praise that we have been blessed to connect with some incredible people (most either disconnected from church or not even Christian) that are interested in helping to get Epic Church off the ground and running.
  3. Prayer as I connect with Allen at La Paloma here in the next week, for my meeting on 12/1 with mayor Jim Bond, and for my lunch with the 2 superintendents over the Encinitas schools…that God will give us favor and that His love, wisdom, discernment, and joy would allow them to see Christ and real, compelling, and desirable for each of these men and for them to know that my greatest desire for these meetings is to discover how we can best love the Encinitas like Jesus loved the people of the communities he spent time in.
  4. Praise that over the past 10 days we have had 3 churches commit to becoming partners with us in 2012!
  5. Pray for more churches and individuals to partner with us!!!  We need several more prayer partners to fervently lift up our needs before the Lord, mission teams to come out and be the hands and feet of Christ here, and financial partners who have been blessed financially and prayerfully, and who feel led to give toward seeing this church be established and expanded to the glory of God for 2012 and beyond.  If you pray about becoming a partner and if God leads you, then please shoot me an email:  Chaz@EpicChurch.co

Be Blessed…Be the Church,

Chaz Churchwell

Epic Church Says Thank You!

Bibles for Epic Church

To all of you who are partnering with us in prayer and financially I want to say “THANK YOU”. Today we received a case (24) Holy Bibles, ESV that will be used by the many in this community that do not own a bible of their own when they show up to our bible study and eventual church services. We got the case for just under $100 including shipping, and we got it thanks to your giving and prayers! I pray that every one of these bibles gets given away and that we have to buy more, because there is no better gift that we can give than to put the Word of God into someones hands!

Oh…you might have noticed the title of this post. Though we are still legally Restore San Diego Now (till we do a DBA), we have chosen a name for this new church in downtown Encinitas, CA. We are Epic Church, and just purchased the domains EpicChurch.co AND EpicChurch.mobi. We found someone who will build us a custom rock’n website for ONLY $900.00 that will speak well to the community we mean to reach, and if you know much about this industry then you know an excellent website is usually in the $2000.00 PLUS range. Please pray that God provides for us to take this next critical step. We are ready now to work on things for our Epic Church logo with a graphic artist and are hopeful to share that with you before the year’s end (again thanks to your giving and partnership).

In conclusion, I want to ask for your continued prayers for our church to meet in the La Paloma theater (btw “La Paloma” is Spanish for “The Dove”). The lunch that I was supposed to have with Allen got postponed due to him having too much on his plate last week. Pray for God to build a great relationship between Allen, me, La Paloma, and Epic Church.
